Chapter 10 – Danger Around Every Corner

Sightseeing in historical Santa Fe was exactly what Sam and Sara needed. They spent the day walking around the city, eating great food and buying souvenirs in the quaint shops.

Oscar and Lucky though, were on high alert. Neither could stop looking over their shoulder. Something felt off. Someone was following them, they could tell. Yet, nothing strange happened the entire day.

As soon as they drove their red compact car back to the resort and pulled up next to the RV, the joy of the day vanished. It was obvious someone had broken into their home on wheels. The heavy front door stood open and was swinging back and forth in the gusty wind.

“Oh Sam, I don’t like the looks of this. Do you think it is safe to go in or should we call the police first?” Sara asked.

As they sat stunned by what they saw, the resort manager ran toward car.

“Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell, I am so sorry this happened. I’ve called the police and they’re on their way. They told me not touch anything and stay outside.”

“When did you first notice this,” Sara questioned, getting out of the car.

“As you were driving up. It wasn’t like this half an hour ago when I made my evening rounds.”

“Did you observe any strangers lurking around?” Sam probed, holding Oscar and Lucky back as they pulled on their leashes.

“No one I didn’t recognize. I saw that chef and his friend walking around the resort and sitting at the picnic table under that tree.” He pointed at the table where they’d seen both men earlier that morning, “It was a quiet day, until I saw this.”

They stopped the conversation as the gates opened and two patrol cars entered. The cars drove straight toward the Mitchell’s RV, sirens blaring and lights flashing.

“Anyone hurt?” asked the first officer.

“No officer. We just arrived back from a day in Santa Fe. We haven’t been in our RV yet.”

“We’ll go in first and then if it is safe, you can enter.”

The two policemen walked up the steps, hands on their service revolvers.

A few minutes later, they came back out shaking their heads.

“Someone was looking for something. You’ll have a mess to clean up that’s for sure. Please take a walk through and let us know if anything was taken.”

The Mitchells looked at each and started up the steps. Oscar and Lucky tried to wiggle out of their arms, but Sam and Sara held them tight.

Drawers were pulled out. The cabinets ransacked. The bed torn apart.

As Sara began picking up dishes and silverware off the floor, she noticed Frank Dunlevy sitting on the picnic table. He was snapping pictures and writing notes. She’d bet her last dog treat he had something to do with the break-in. Proving it though, that was a different story.

Whoever it was, hadn’t found the safe.

“Okay Lucky, here’s what we need to do,” Oscar began laying out their crime solving plan, “We memorize the smells. We want to find the human by his scent.
